Society needs competent people.
We idolise the brilliant, hard-working neurosurgeon, and for good reason.
But as the landscape of interventions shifts, people will scramble to fortify their scopes. And in the process, it seems likely that competence and prestige will be increasingly decoupled.
So, if our goal is to do great work, we'll probably need to look beyond existing status games.
What might we aim for instead?
